Heads & Chairs: Leading Academic Departments
Leading an academic department in a university is one of the most challenging, yet crucial, roles in higher education. It is also one of the most difficult positions to fill within an institution. Uniquely positioned between senior management and faculty, departmental chairs are responsible for a growing portfolio. Along with being the voice of a department and dealing effectively with faculty, staff and students, department chairs are involved in new budget models, enrolment management and in some cases fund raising.
Heads and chairs remain the best positioned to set the departmental tone, build and sustain a healthy and collegial unit and move departments in new directions. Along with opportunities are challenges, and department leaders must exhibit both leadership and management and be able to deal with conflict both within and beyond the unit.
This two and a half day workshop provides you with foundational knowledge and skills to develop and enhance your academic leadership at the departmental level. Led by a team of experienced academic administrators, the workshop draws upon both the literature and practice of academic leadership presented in a highly interactive setting. Join department leaders from across Canadian universities for an exceptional learning and networking opportunity.
