Program Description

The Language Seminar provides a study experience at the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Kyiv, Ukraine. Practical language training in Ukrainian or Russian, and an extensive exploration of contemporary Ukrainian or Russian culture and Ukrainian mythology comprise this travel/study program. Organized in small groups according to level of language proficiency, students are given the maximum individual attention. Excursions are planned in Kyiv and neighbouring sites.

Course Credits

Students must register for a total of 6 credit hours in either the Ukrainian or Russian language seminar option as follows:

Ukrainian

  • UKRN 1230 A60 Language Seminar in Ukraine 1 (3 credit hours)
  • or

  • UKRN 3880 T60 Special Studies: Language (3 credit hours)
  • and

  • UKRN 2260 A60 Ukrainian Culture Seminar Abroad (3 credit hours)
  • or

  • UKRN 2510 A60 Ukrainian Mythology (3 credit hours)

Russian

  • RUSN 2630 A60 Russian Language Seminar Abroad (3 credit hours)
  • and

  • RUSN 3790 T60 Special Studies: Russian Cultural Seminar Abroad (3 credit hours)

Details on these courses are available online on Aurora. Academic fees are payable to the University of Manitoba. Tuition fees vary for international students.

Admission

All participants applying for the Travel Study course must have the approval of the instructor, and must attend pre-trip sessions, complete assignments, and attend all travel/study sponsored events to be eligible for academic credit.

Travel Fees

  • Travel fee is $2,000.00 USD paid directly to the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Kyiv. The travel fee includes accommodation (shared room in university residence), some meals, and tuition at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, excursions and some local travel.
  • Airfare, personal expenses, health and trip cancellation insurance, as well as University of Manitoba tuition are not included. Students traveling with the group or on their own are responsible for their travel arrangements to Kyiv, Ukraine (and return), in accordance with the published course dates.
  • Travel fees may be paid by cash, debit, or credit card and must be paid on or before May 31, 2016.
  • Canadians or landed immigrants studying full-time at a university or college in Canada who are registering for the Ukrainian courses listed may be eligible for a grant of up to $750.00 CAD from the Taras Shevchenko Foundation. Contact Iryna Kostantiuk for more information.

Requirements

  • Students are required to attend pre-trip sessions.
  • In order to participate in a travel/study course, all students must sign an Acknowledgement of Responsibility and Liability Waiver that outlines risk and shared responsibility associated with travel/study.
  • A passport is required.
