The Centre for Higher Education Research and Development (CHERD) at the University of Manitoba is Canada’s premier centre dedicated to the professional development of university and colleges administrators and managers.
Established in 1987 at the University of Manitoba CHERD offers regional and national courses, programs, seminars, and workshops.
Professional development programs are delivered both face to face in intensive or in-house settings and through extensive online offerings and webinars.
Professional Development Offerings
University Management Course (UMC)
Structured around a model of leadership, the course highlights strategic planning, the legal framework and governance of institutions, aligning budgets with strategic directions, decision-making and team building, negotiation and conflict resolution and organizational justice for students and employees. UMC is appropriate for department heads, associate deans, directors or others with similar administrative roles in academic or support units who are looking to enhance their leadership skills and achieve better outcomes.
Senior University Administrators Course (SUAC)
Join senior university and college administrators from across Canada in a premier program that will consider the major issues and trends impacting higher education, share essential techniques for managing the interpersonal aspects of an academic leadership role, and provide the specific tools to assist in managing day-to-day operational needs. The program, led by a team with extensive senior university experience, will utilize case studies, interactive presentations, and discussions. There will also be the opportunity for one-to-one consultations with team members. SUAC is appropriate for senior post-secondary leaders.
Canadian Institute on Student Affairs and Services (CISAS)
Enhancing student success is not straightforward and you can’t do it without the support of your institutional partners. This program is intended to provide a solid foundation and is targeted to all people in the area of Student Affairs and Services. Develop a greater awareness of Student Affairs and Services by building a stronger foundation of knowledge and skills, and better ways to enhance and leverage the support of your institutional partners CISAS is appropriate for participants in all areas of student services.
Certificate in University and College Administration I (CUCA I)
Get the background on the complex cultures and administrative challenges found in modern universities and colleges, while learning to become an integral member of the academic administrative team. CUCA I is appropriate for mid-level academic administrators and managers practicing in a post-secondary setting.
Certificate in University and College Administration II (CUCA II)
Enhance and strengthen your managerial and leadership skills in either academic or administrative units, and learn to address current and emerging issues across a wide range of circumstances. CUCA II is an advanced program appropriate for academic administrators and managers practicing in a post-secondary setting.

Letter of Accomplishment in Academic Advising
This is the only program focusing on enhancing skills and knowledge in academic advising within the Canadian context. Instructors have extensive experience both in theory and practice of academic advising in Canadian universities and colleges. The LOA Academic Advising is appropriate for those in advising functions in universities and colleges.
Integrated Planning and Budgeting
Discover how integrated planning can effectively link an institutions academic, financial and capital plans across all levels of the organization. The Integrated Planning and Budgeting workshop is appropriate for academic leaders, senior capital and resource planners, and mid-level staff with responsibility for budgeting and resources.
Heads & Chairs: Challenges in Academic Leadership
Academic leadership at the departmental level is a critical role in universities and colleges across Canada. Led by experienced higher administrators join colleagues from across Canada to reflect on the opportunities and opportunities of key role. The Heads & Chairs workshop is appropriate for department heads and chairs, and academic area coordinators in universities and colleges.
